Mariners Inn starts Creative Series for Awareness

Mariners Inn, an organization that provides 24-hour residential substance abuse treatment for men in Southeastern Michigan who are homeless, starts their four part event series this April. The first event, on April 19 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Music Hall Center for the Performing Arts, is Above Water: The Words of the Resilient, an evening of poetry, live art and music, to celebrate those who create while living with depression.

This event series was made possible through a partnership with Mariners Inn and the Detroit Wayne Mental Health Authority (DWMHA), after the CEO attended the 2016 Mariners Inn gala and got inspired. Mariners Inn has a poetry program and at the gala residents read their poetry to the guests.

“He was so struck by their vulnerability and talent that he pledged that night to fund Mariners Inn's poetry program,” said Stephanie Maurice, director of fund development and marketing at Mariners Inn.
Above Water: The Words of the Resilient is an evening that welcomes the community to get involved in the conversation about homelessness, addiction, depression and resiliency in the Detroit area.

“With each event in the series, we will celebrate different life situations and struggles,” Maurice said. “Depression was chosen for the first event because it's something that many people relate to on different levels, and we know that much depth and beauty can be created from any struggle, including depression.”
Joel Fluent Greene is the event host and in addition to the Gentleman Poets of Mariners Inn, guest performances by Lhea J. Love, Whitney Syphax Walker, Scheherazade Parrish, Marcel Fable Price, Deonte Osayande and Clarity Levine are on the evening’s agenda.

“I'm excited that guests will be able to experience the amazing work of the poets for themselves,” Maurice said. “I hope that this event will help guests look at their own lives and struggles through the lens of creativity, as well as to understand that those sharing their stories through poetry are simply people, just like them, despite whatever different life circumstances and struggles they may have experienced.”
Guests will also be able to enjoy live art by Joe Harmon and music by DJ Equad.

Above Water: The Words of the Resilient takes place at 7 p.m. on April 19 at the Jazz Cafe at Music Hall Center for the Performing Arts, 350 Madison St. There is no cover charge.
